UJVNL (formarly known as Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) is a forward looking wholly owned Government of Uttarakhand undertaking situated at Dehradun, incorporated primarily to promote and develop hydro power potential in Uttarakhand, after bifurcation of State of erstwhile Uttar Pradesh into Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This company came in to existence on 12th February, 2001 to run the existing hydro power generation stations and development and promotion of new hydro power stations.

State of Uttarakhand is also known as ‘Urja Pradesh’ and is well known for its picturesque beauty and origin of pious rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Mandakini Tons, Kaliganga, Asiganga etc. and their tributaries giving abundant opportunities for generation of the hydro power. These rivers which are supported by small rivers, canals and tributaries offer great potential for development of small hydro projects.
